The Nickel Plate Story
Hardcover with Dust Jacket
The remarkable theme of John Rehor’s The Nickel Plate Story is that the road not only survived but prospered, once free of the Vanderbilt domination that overtook it soon after construction. Along the way NKP absorbed the Clover Leaf, the Lake Erie & Western, and the Wheeling & Lake Erie (each of which had a rich and interesting history), then - guided by the fabulous Van Sweringen brothers - controlled and was controlled by the much larger Chesapeake & Ohio. What had seemed to be pointless duplication of rail route-milage when NKP was built turned into a very practical piece of railroad by competitive 20th century standards.
This volume includes more that 150,000 words, 527 photos, a system map complete with division profiles, 67 pages of illustrated locomotive rosters, 17 chapter maps, and passenger car and caboose rosters. In this volume is everything pertinent to the Nickel Plate’s life.
