Super Power Steam Locomotives
very good condition with dust jacket
third printing, July 1969

The Lima Locomotive Works in the United States and throughout the world became synonymous with steam locomotive perfection. Long a builder of locomotives, though known best for the unique Shay geared engine, a Lima product personified in all minds the finest in design, performance and style.

The year 1925 marked the beginning of a new era for Lima and railroading. In a true renaissance of moving materials over steel rails, the steam locomotive came of age with the introduction of Lima's experimental engine A-1, a 203 ton Berkshire type and the first Super Power steam locomotive. Following the great success of the A-1, Lima erected 699 Super Power locomotives substantially from this design.

This constitutes an extraordinary book about a well known builder, whose pride in craftsmanship was never sacrificed to conveyor belt production. The author chronicles the company history, how it all started, takes you step by step from the era of the Shay to Nickel Plate No. 779, Lima's last locomotive. He shows photographically how locomotives are put together and erected, features the test runs of the A-1 and interviews about Super Power performance from the engineer's side, then presents hundreds of superb illustrations expertly integrated into the sparkling text. The photographs which complement this classic work date from the first Shay to No. 779, the last of steam.
