• In the late 1800s, large construction projects required lots of timber and flat cars were essential for carrying lumber from sawmills to build sites. Union Pacific boxcars were used for fresh fruit service on the California Fast Freight Line and train staff used conductor cars to monitor the safety of the journey as well as a place to rest. The Union Pacific was one of the instrumental railroads to lay trakc in 1863 to help complete the western part of the Transcontinental Railroad.
